Many months have passed already and now we have a big reward, as WTA tennis action slowly starts coming back. It’s great news to hear that Serena Williams, one of tennis’ biggest icons ever, will be headlining the Western & Southern Open in New York, ,scheduled to start on August 21st, and then we will see her again, still in New York, but in one of WTA’s majors, the U.S. Open, which is scheduled to start on August 31st.
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused multiple tournament cancellations, as expected, but now we finally see the light as the schedule starts to open again and we finally get to see some good action. Palermo Open in Italy to kick off the month, Prague Open in Czech Republic on the 10th, The Top Seed Open presented by Bluegrass Orthopaedics in Kentucky, starting on the 10th as well, and then we finish off the month with the two already mentioned tournaments, Western & Southern Open and U.S. Open, both in New York.
Let’s not forget that tennis, contrary to what some people think, is one of the sports that brings more volume to sportsbook operations, and not only because it’s a cool sport, but also because the odds are usually high on the favorites, which causes people to lay more money to bet on a “sure bet”.
WTA Global Ranking as of March 16th, pre-pandemic
As much as we’re used to see Serena Williams right on top of the list, let’s remember that she’s already quite the veteran and hasn’t played in many tournaments this year, only 11, as opposed to 20 or 25 that younger elements have participated on so far this year.
This is how the WTA Ranking’s Top 10 stands right now:
#1 Ashleigh Barty: 8717 points in 17 tournaments played
#2 Simona Halep: 6076 pts – 16 tournaments
#3 Karolina Pliskova: 5205 pts – 20 tournaments
#4 Sofia Kenin: 4590 pts – 25 tournaments
#5 Elina Svitolina: 4580 pts – 24 tournaments
#6 Bianca Andreescu: 4555 pts – 10 tournaments
#7 Kiki Bertens: 4335 pts – 25 tournaments
#8 Belinda Bencic: 4010 pts – 25 tournaments
#9 Serena Williams: 3915 pts – 11 tournaments
#10 Naomi Osaka: 3625 pts – 16 tournaments
It will be great to see all this big stars back on the court and of course, it’s great for bettors and sportsbooks to finally be able to offer lines for important tennis events, something that gives us high hopes for other sports.
